5 Ways to Decorate for Christmas Spending little to Nothing

Have you read my latest blog post about the FREE Christmas Special? We watched The Chosen LIVE Christmas Special this week and it was WONDERFUL! It was like all things beautiful about Christmas. What is something you love about Christmas? Maybe you enjoy a particular song, person, or memory?

One thing I enjoy about the Christmas season is the Christmas markets and how malls decorate with elaborate lights, massive bulbs and decorations. I enjoy feeling like I’m in a Hallmark movie or a winter wonderland.

Last year we decorated our house basically from top to bottom. It felt like we lived in a Christmas snow globe.

We value our family time so getting our kids involved in everything we are doing that promotes family is a MUST. So when we decided to turn our home into a winter wonderland it got funner and funner!

  1. Wall Snowflakes. There is a particular way to make snowflakes so we looking it up on youtube. You can take a construction piece of paper or any paper really and fold it to make a square (corner to corner) then we cut a strip (TIP: save the strip) and continued to fold the square to cut out the snowflake. The snowflakes made fun decorations for all our walls. Our kids spent the whole eventing making the snowflakes and enjoyed spending family time together crafting!
  2. Pretend Christmas presents. Store’s like the Dollar Store or Sobeys have boxes you can take. So select the size you want and take home your free Christmas box. Then use your wrapping paper, turn any wrapping paper inside out (to use the white side and add a bow), or ask for Christmas wrapping paper on free upcycle sites like: Upcycling Strathcona County or North Edmonton Upcycle. Wrap it up then put it out for Free decorations.
  3. Stuff animals. Take any stuffy that reminds you of Christmas/Holiday/Winter time. Then take a scarf and tie it around its neck. BOOM instant holiday decoration. In the photo above, I used a work out ball and tied a bedsheet around it to look like a snowman. Just had to think creatively!
  4. Children’s school art. For a least the last month your child (if you have kids) are making holiday art. So when they bring it home, display it! It also installs creativity and encourages them to keep making those art pieces for Christmas decorations around the home. I like to put mine on the cupboards so they see it and can chat with you about school, Christmas memories you may have or something else. It is a fantastic conversation starter (or continuer).
  5. Christmas cards “wreath”. When you receive a Christmas card no matter who it is to in the family or where it is from, make a Christmas card display! We have a big mirror in our main room and when we receive a Christmas card, we put in on the mirror so it starts to look like a Christmas card wreath. That way kids can see the pretty cards and add to it themselves!

TIP: Remember those extra strips from the snowflakes? Use them as bookmarks! You instantly have many two craft nights out of one product. Divide the strips between your kids and have them draw a Christmas picture or love message on them , signing their name for them to deliver to neighbours, friends at school or church family.

This will get your child thinking about giving at Christmas and sharing love with those around them. This is a free gift that you didn’t have to add any cash to but an overflow of what you have already created in your home.

Merry Christmas
